Nice Long Sunday Sail

We took ReOrient out  for a nice long Sunday sail yesterday.  Left Five Mile River around 11:30, getting back around 3:00, staying on just a few tacks most of the trip.  The wind was good for the most part with some luffing going on from time to time.

Here's a picture of the three lovely ladies having some girl time on the way in ... I think they were really up there to keep away from the fly's that invaded us halfway through the sail.

Zeiglers Cove

The four of us took ReOrient out for a short sail Sunday morning then stopped for lunch at Zeiglers Cove.  We got there and picked up a mooring just before the rush.  Very pretty but a lot of boats looking for moorings.  Since we forgot to take pictures, here are a few I found on the web ... on a quieter day.

Maiden Sail

We took ReOrient out for her maiden sail this afternoon.  She's moored on Five Mile River, no more than a few minutes from the sound in Rowayton.  The engine starts without choking it and runs smooth ... really smooth.  Once we got her out into the sound, we put up the main and then the jib and she is a pleasure to sail.  We had a good wind for the first sail, not too strong, but strong enough to get a feel for her.

The sheet we used for the jib does not seem long enough, so that's one change and there are a few other minor adjustments that we'll make, but already looking forward to the next sail.

Teak, Teak and More Teak!

The railings are now being refinished and secured.  Before and after.  Looking good Hank!

Drinks at Dusk

OK, so ReOrient is tied to a slip at the boat yard, but she still looks like a pretty nice place to spend some time in the evening.

In the Water

Hank took a few shots after Paul and crew put ReOrient into the water.  The Stuffing Box and Center Board leaked a bit at first, but all seems OK.  More work to do on the Mast tomorrow and they will also try and start the engine and we suspect replace the Impellers.

It it possible the maiden sail (or at least the maiden movement to the mooring) is the 2nd or 3rd of August?

Goodbye Pindari

Commander Kelley took care of the renaming ... now ReOrient can slip into the sea and the mast can get stepped.

Down the Hatch

Our stripped and soon to be teak oiled hatch. Nice work Sagman! 2 hours of hard work along with 2 beers down the hatch... well, not the wood hatch.

Tartan 27 Production History

This production history puts ReOrient as a 1968, not a 1969 provided it is hull 397 … it could have be produced in 1968 and sold in 1969 which makes sense as it would have been one of the last produced in 1968.

Up on stands in Norwalk

Here's a shot of ReOrient, now up on stands at United Marine Boat Works in Norwalk, CT.  Hank and Kelly washed and polished her and Wayne removed the old name getting ready for the new one.

United Marine sanded the bottom and Hank is going to give it one coat this week.  After that, it goes in the water and the crew at United Marine will step the mast and check out the wiring and engine.

Sails are in good shape

Mya, Kelley and Hank cleaned up the sails this weekend.   They reported back that they were in good shape, but the Mainsail Battens were missing.  Hopefully that mystery will be solved soon.

Checking the Engine

We spent a lot of hours in Orient getting the engine to turn over including replace the starter as well as the fuel pump.  Sill more work to do in Connecticut, but it did start.  Below is a picture of custom made tool to feed water to the engine (for cooling) when on dry land.  Never used it, but we're very proud of this Rube Goldberg tool.

Finally getting a start

In late June, Amal and Wayne started the process of preparing the boat for transport to Connecticut from Orient. All in all it took the crew four days over three weeks to get it ready.  Below is one more picture with the canvas on and then an hour or two later some images with the canvas and rigging off the boat.

Pros and Cons of Tartan 27 from Practical Sailor

Here is an  analysis of Tartan 27  on the pros and cons of getting a Tartan 27 from Practical Sailor magazine.
The future ReOrient sits safely under a tarp on the side of Amal's workshop in Orient NY.

ReOrient's Origins

ReOrient was built is 1969 and is hull number 397 and given to us by good friends Amal and Catherine who sailed it quite a bit, but then had it on blocks for seven years.  It had a base list price of $12,800, so you can imagine it's held it's value pretty well through the years.
